Frequently Asked Questions
What Style of Shorin Ryu?
There are 4 major schools of Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate. We teach Kobayashi Ryu. There is also Matsumura Seito Ryu, Shobayashi Ryu, and Matsubayashi Ryu. The founder of Shorin Ryu karate, Chosin Chibana was the last of the pre-World War karate masters, also called the "Last Warrior of Shuri". He was the first to establish a Japanese ryu name for an Okinawan karate style, calling Itosu's karate "Shorin-Ryu" (or "the small forest style") in 1928. "Shorin" is actually the Japanese pronounciation of the Chinese word "Shaolin" and they share the same kanji.
